My unlucky trip

Posted by jaronliu on July 25, 2009

I’m typing this on the plane. Never before I’ve been so unlucky. My flight to London was super delayed due to some rain in southern England. The delay is (and still counting) 5 hrs. The cost is a missed connection to reykjavik Iceland. My holiday is ruined already. My point is – never use budget air for connection, only use one airline and at least you have some insurance.

1 week Braga and 1 day Porto

Posted by jaronliu on July 21, 2009

Long story short…

Got a grant, went for summer school, got to know a bunch of nice portugueses (and others), had the best “conference food” ever, got to see how they celebrated st john fest, had 1 day tour of porto, bought several bottles of green and port wine, bought 20 euros worth of snacks for em.

Photos here, enjoy!

My Mobile History… Do you remember yours?

Posted by jaronliu on July 11, 2009

Em says i waste alot of money, come to think of it, its quite true.

During JC, I remembered pestering my parents to get me a Erricson mobile (I cant even remember the model) coz I don’t like “pagers” anymore. This is absolute waste of money SINCE NO ONE calls me, not even my parents.

In army, everyone was having these small nice little Nokia fones – the Nokia 8250 with blue screen? You remember? I decide to spent half (or isit one) month of army’s stipend to buy them. This time not so bad, at least got 7 people can call me (I only got 7 army mates coz I’m PES E and work in office one, but I work on intelligence, no joke k)

Entering Uni, Sony merged with Erricson to form SE and SE was hot back then, and so I got a SE T610 or something - phone with cam!!! Something cool since its a CAM PHONE!!! Again its a waste of money, cam sucks and I don’t remember taking any pics with the phone cam AT ALL, I only remember using the FLASH light as a torch light at night.

Middle of Uni, SE was still hot and I upgraded to K700i – the silver chrome looking phone with better cam and more stylish. Waste of money since no difference with the T610, just looks cooler thats all and with radio I think. Actually this fone is the least waste of money coz I actually used it till the joystick screwed up and CONTINUED using it.

End of Uni, Nokia became hot again due to the release of multimedia fone. My K700i by then was really screwed up and my contract ended (meaning I used K700i x more than 2 years!!! bravo…) and so its a good time to buy a new phone. I bought the N80IE (EVEN THOUGH N95 was already out) – for once I actually “try” to save money. N80IE was good, first time I actually used the fone to take some pics and with the advent of VOIP, the native SIP client in N80IE served me really well.

Went to Italy in 2007 and then came back to SG for hols 2008 and could not resist the new TOUCH screen fones… HTC!!!! Upgraded (my N80IE was in such mint condition that I actually feel waste of money at point of sales but still did it anyway) and got HTC diamond – slick thin touch etc

3 days after HTC diamond, realised could not get used to touch screen, also because the HTC touchflo was still buggy then, traded privately with another person to get the N95_8GB. Nothing special except that cam is perfect, 3G data plans = internet everywhere, Garmin mobile XT = turn-by-turn navigation…

I thot N95-8GB IS GOING TO BE MY LAST FONE because its so perfect and I have no complaints. BUT as they always say, nothing is constant except change. My beloved N95-8GB was stolen during a trip to Madrid. Totally pissed and I actually have to digg my old K700i to use depsite the fuck up joystick. 2 weeks after, decided that life is NEVER going to be the same unless I do something. Again waste of money and went to buy the Nokia N96 – EVERYTHING the same as N95-8GB except more memory (or so I thot). The OS is SLOW, fucking slower than N95 I think. NO NATIVE SIP and I have to rely on FRING to make SIP calls. Anyhow, this is a CONTRACT fone (with 3 Italia) and so I have to BEAR with it.

Back to the present now. Few weeks ago, I went to Braga – Portugal (still haven blog about it, hopefully will do it soon), a friend lend me her iphone 3G to play and I thot its PRETTY SMOOTH. At the same time, as you all know, 3GS was launched and the speed is supposed to be 2X more!!!! Anyhow I researched a little to see if 3GS can serve my purpose and actually it could (with JB + some cydia apps) = I could do native sip over 3G, I could multi task, I could do also turn-by-turn navi and have the smooth touch feeling. This is something I could not resist!!!! SO THIS TIME ITS A BIG WASTE of money and I got the 32GB 3GS (16GB was out of stock and I was like fuck it, just get it).

So is this the end? Is 3GS going to be my last? I doubt so, maybe the next best fone is andriod or palm or blackberry or nokia or SE – who knows. Technology goes on and so there is no point waiting – at least this is the only excuse I can give myself for wasting money (the other excuse I used for Em is that this is my bday present but then I also got a HP EX485 mediasmart server using the same excuse, this will be another story another day).
