Why do you guys always go Chinatown?

Posted by jaronliu on August 27, 2007

I still remember this was what Neeraj Kumar said. During our travellings in the States, no matter which city we go to, we would always want to have our first lunch or dinner at chinatown.

So then when I found out that Milano has a chinatown, I was pretty happy coz I could have lunch/dinner there when I am too lazy to cook.

BUT… Milano’s chinatown can only be described with 3 letters – WTF!

I know Milano is a fashion city. But what I don’t understand is why these chinese dudes also wanna blend in and sell clothes when obviously the pattern that they sell are not fashionable at all! Its like “Made in Italy by Chinese“, who will be interested?

Seriously, the chinese dudes should stick to selling good authentic asian food. I bet their business will be so much better than what they are doing now – swapping flies daily.

Anyhow take-away point is, I can’t get food which I miss/like - “dao huay”, “shao rou”, “ji fan”, “laksa”, etc…

Look at the slideshow and spot the difference!

P/S – When I was at Milano Chinatown today, I spotted a group of Singaporeans!!! How do I know they are from Sg? From their conversation - “Eh very disappointing lei, how come bo eh dragon gate one ah? So you all tired already? Lets go eat lah?” Uniquely Singapore indeed…

Dry Ice Bomb

Posted by jaronliu on August 25, 2007

Quote from Eppendorf

“The patented hinged lid on these tubes eliminates any danger of leaks. Safe-Lock micro test tubes guarantee absolute safety during work with expensive or toxic samples, radioactive substances or DNA. The 0.5 ml, 1.5 ml and 2.0 ml test tubes have a graduation scale and a writing surface. The 0.5 ml Safe-Lock micro test tube is ideal for all PCR experiments. The lid hook prevents the tube from opening accidentally (e.g. during heating)

The juice is that this cap is super tight and will not open in any other circumstances unless you manually open it.  Anyhow, I decided to put this to the test!

Figure 1. The tube is fragmented upon stress. This results indicate that the binding between the seal and the cap is indeed of very high affinity. A control experiment was also done using normal tube and the cap simply snap open under the stress test instead of tube fragmentation (data not shown).

Everyone drinks wine here…

Posted by jaronliu on August 22, 2007

Sometimes even early in the morning at 8am! Every morning when I walked to the bus stop, I always see this uncle sipping his red wine at my nearby “bar cum caffe” place.

I don’t really like wine, prefer beer better. Anyhow, to be part of them and the culture, I bought a bottle of white wine as “decoration” so that if any Italian friends ever come to my place, I’ll look more “professional“.

Passion leads to money

Posted by jaronliu on August 21, 2007

I previously mentioned briefly on this before.

Anyhow take-away point is, my dream and passion is to make a change in the food industry, create a difference in the way people eat…

My labmates think I eat too much…

Posted by jaronliu on August 20, 2007

They say since I am in Italy, I should stick to Mediterranean diet!

This is the formular for 1 week. This reminds me of a typical pharmaceutical formulation – meat as the API, riso/pasta as excipient, and vege/fruits as diluent!

Ingredients                                           Amount

Meat                                                   2  portion per week

Riso/Pasta                                                    Daily

Vege/Fruits                                                   q.s

* 1 portion is equivalent to ~ 150g

* q.s is add to sufficient quantity, depending on your appetite.

Italians like eat their pasta plainly one, really just pasta with no meat and no/little sauce. If its too dry, they just add some olive oil. Their side dish is some vege like potatos or carrots or spinach or salads. Finally, yogurt or a fruit after the meal.

For sure I can’t do with such diet. Can you?

Hyperlinks

Posted by jaronliu on August 19, 2007

We are all so used to hyperlinks, at least for me.

You see this very nice poster that really excites/attracts you. There is a weblink which gives more details. You try to write down the link but it goes something like this ”http://www.something-very-exciting.com/check_it_out_here/reference/api/org/eclipse/jface/text/main/index.html

Have this ever occured to you? It ALWAYS happens to me, especially posters on scientific conferences and seminars.

If only you can just click and open there and then… geesed…

Bottled Water

Posted by jaronliu on August 18, 2007

Italians don’t drink tap water. They neither boil nor filter the tap water too. They drink bottled mineral water, which fortunately is quite cheap at about 20 euro cents per 1.5 litre bottle.

So anyhow, PL (E611 head of household) is coming to travel abit in Italy and thus will drop by Milano to visit me. For those who dunnoe her, she is one who drinks loads and loads of water. As such, in my preparation to host her, I have started to buy bottled water everyday. Carrying these bottles up 5 floors everyday without lift is really tough.

Oh and by the way, all these water (and still counting) are just for her one day visit in Milano…
